Joy Still Abounds
It can be a challenge to feel joy these days. Trust me, I Know. Nevertheless, the capacity for its expression still lingers. As we ponder all that transpires in the world: wars, famines and persecutions, we often find ourselves feeling downtrodden. Even in the midst of these horrific circumstances, there remains an inner joy resulting from the recognition of our ever-present blessings.
Upon awakening this morning, my ears were delighted by a merry songbird’s lilt. Since childhood, their sweet chirpings have cheered my heart. As I looked out my window, I spied bountifully blooming trees and vibrant spring flowers. Evidence of the beauty of God’s creation is everywhere…joy ensues.
The gift of joy can be found in the simple smile of a stranger. There is great comfort in the receiving of this unspoken gift of love. It touches another’s lonely soul. It also recognizes that person’s inherent worth in the eyes of God. Christ, I am sure, smiled freely (and often) at others.
Songs of Praise create feelings of joy in both the singer, and listener. As one lifts up their voice to glorify God, joy spreads throughout their being. Spirits are touched as we listen to these moving hymns…we often spontaneously cry at their beauty:
Psalm 95:1 KJV
O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
Last, but hardly least, Prayer naturally manifests a posture of joy. As we consider God’s blessings towards us in times both past and present, we give him praise. For we know that he is indeed a good God and that all circumstance works for the advancement of his Kingdom.
Philippians 4:4 KJV
Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.
